Care Quality Commission Report

  We were last inspected by the Care Quality Commission in October 2018 and we have retained our overall 'Good' rating and been awarded an 'Outstanding' rating for the care we provide.
The full report reflects the high standards of care and the friendly, family atmosphere we strive to maintain here at The Old Vicarage.

We are regulated by the Care Quality Commission which is the independent regulator of health and social care services in England. In the CQCs own words:

​everyone. They regulate Care Homes, Nursing Homes, Doctors Surgeries and Hospitals.

“People talked to us with enthusiasm about the activities they had enjoyed. "I go to art and crafts, keep fit, active sport (exercises and games), two different sorts of quizzes, a harpist comes, and [name] runs an afternoon of classical music…This afternoon a man is coming to play the pianola and we sing songs. We do flower arranging for the home. We have entered things in the Otterton flower show", "They take us on outings.  We went to the Pavilion in Exmouth for a cream tea, we went to Bicton Gardens" and "I know there are plenty of things going on…I go to the musical things, keep fit.  I love going outside for a walk…It's easy to make friends here." One person told us, "On Sundays, before lunch, we have a sherry meeting and staff always come.  We have photographs and talk about news events, and the dog comes."

 “People's relatives and friends were able to visit without being unnecessarily restricted. People and relatives said they were made to feel welcome when they visited the home. One person said, when asked, "very much welcomed by staff.  They always make you a cup of tea or get you anything you need."

“Staff ensured people were involved in their monthly reviews to ensure they were happy with the care they received. One person said, "Once a month (registered manager) comes around and goes through everything…your weight, blood pressure, and any problems that you have."

“The directors were visible in the home and were liked and respected by staff, people and visitors alike. Each Sunday the directors or the registered managers hosted a sherry morning for people. The provider's ethos and philosophy was "The Old Vicarage and its gardens, belong to the residents who have chosen to make it their home.  We are here, as a team, to watch over the home, to make sure that we provide holistic care, in a friendly, family atmosphere. Our residents are treated like our extended family, and looked after in a way we would wish for one of our own family members." All staff followed the provider's values for the service and put people first.”

A visiting chiropodist said, "I have always found their approach to resident care and wellbeing to be of the highest standard.  Nothing is too much trouble."

Staff were kind, friendly and loving towards people and were seen positively interacting with them, chatting, laughing and joking. People and visitors said they felt the standard of care at The Old Vicarage was very high. People's comments included, "Halcyon days… everything is wonderful, peaceful and lovely. They care with love here...  I have never bumped into one of the staff without a smile on their faces."; "Staff are very good, they look after me very well, I can't fault them in any way" and "I don't think you could find anywhere better and they are so kind."; "Everything is wonderful, if you have to be in a home, no better place."

Health and social care professionals gave positive comments about the caring nature of the staff. Comments included, "The staff are very experienced and caring. They seem very sympathetic to individual resident's needs."; "The staff are extremely caring and supportive at all times. Dignity is prioritised and their opinion sought wherever possible."; "I have always found my patients really well cared for in a very empathetic and caring manner."; "They involve people in decision making where possible and they do respect individual's dignity and privacy."

The atmosphere at the home was calm and welcoming with people living there appearing 'at home'… There were comfortable communal areas for people to use as they pleased. People's rooms were personalised with their personal possessions, photographs and furniture.

Activities formed an important part of people's lives...  People said there were different things and activities available to occupy their time. They had a themed day most months. For example the previous week they had a St David's day celebration.

People also said they were happy with the food and that they were offered a choice if they did not want what was on the menu. Comments included…  "The food is great, always good”… The lunchtime meal was a very sociable occasion, people chatted and socialised with each other. Staff served each table in turn and went around offering and serving vegetables and potatoes.
